Ways to Teach Kids in the Kitchen

ways to teach kids in the kitchen

Today I’m sharing a cute infographic with lots of ways to teach kids in the kitchen.

I think it’s so important to involve your children when you’re working in the kitchen. There is so much for them to learn in there – not just how to cook, but math skills, creativity, and responsibility.

I began involving my children in the kitchen from a young age. When my older daughter was a toddler, I’d let her play in a big bowl of rice, or let her pour water back and forth between containers. One of her favorite activities was “washing dishes”. She would stand on a chair at the kitchen sink with some cups and water, and it would keep her busy for quite awhile. This allowed me to get dinner cooked or to prep ingredients for a future meal.

Now that she’s older she can stir soup or stir fries, peel vegetables (with assistance), churn butter in our hand crank churner, and help make cookies and muffins. My two year old daughter can now stand next to us and “wash dishes” while the five year old and I prepare food!

I’m not saying that it’s easy to manage small children in the kitchen or that they won’t make an epic mess, but it’s important to teach them to function in the kitchen. Pick out a simple recipe they can help with, set aside some time (at least twice as much as it would usually take you to make it!), and have your child help you make it.

Today’s post is another collaboration with Shari’s Berries. They’re sharing this cute and informative infographic with 16 ways to teach kids in the kitchen. This visual shows the skills children of different ages can learn in the kitchen and practical ways to apply them.
