Continuing with the clothing category, I had to finish going through my accessories. I count jewelry as an accessory, although if you wish you could wait and lump it into the komono category. I included it in the clothing category for three reasons: I keep jewelry near my clothing, choose it in relation to what I’m wearing, and I wanted to use it as more practice for honing my joy barometer.
The Konmari Method: Clothing, Part 4
Jewelry
Jewelry was an almost overwhelming sub-category.
I don’t wear much jewelry these days, since I have small children. Most days I only wear earring studs and my wedding band. Despite that, even after doing multiple jewelry purges, I still had an epic twenty one necklaces, fifteen bracelets, forty five pairs of earrings, three brooches, two watches, and two hair clips.
I really wanted to get my jewelry down to a manageable amount that was easy to store. I had jewelry hanging up on two racks, stuffed into a smallish standing jewelry box, and also filling up a large ugly jewelry box that took up a ton of room on my dresser. The goal was to discard enough jewelry that I could once and for all get rid of the large box and reclaim some space on my dresser.
This sub-category is an example of where the Konmari method really shines. It was much easier to evaluate my jewelry when it was all laid out before me, rather than glancing at it in a bunch of different locations.
The first thing I did was pull out and set aside the pieces that definitely sparked joy. This included all my favorite daily wear earrings, such as my small pearl earrings I got on my honeymoon in Maui. I also kept all the other jewelry I bought in Maui, because even if I don’t currently wear those necklaces and bracelets much, it still brings me great joy when I see them. I kept most of my seasonal jewelry, such as my Halloween earrings, as well.
The total count of jewelry I kept: twelve necklaces, thirteen bracelets, thirty one pairs of earrings, four rings, one watch, and one hair clip.
I was able to reduce my jewelry storage by 1/3! My remaining earrings all fit into the standing jewelry box, and my necklaces all fit on my wall mounted jewelry racks.
I’m pleased to have all my favorite jewelry arranged beautifully where I can see it, and I’ve regained valuable space.
I will be back with one final post in the clothing category. There was one type of garment I had way too many of that ended up causing quite a mishap! It definitely deserves its own post. Can you guess what it was?
