I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season and that you have started the new year off on the right foot!
It’s the start of a brand new year, so let’s talk about goals.
Setting goals and sticking to them is kind of a new thing for me. I never used to be much of a goal setter. New Year’s day would come, and I’d hear talk everywhere about making resolutions, so I’d decide it’s something I needed to do so as well. I’d halfheartedly make a resolution or two and then promptly forget about them.
Then, a few years ago, I found Laura from How to GYST’s YouTube channel. (Coincidentally, her channel was also my first exposure to someone going through the entire Konmari Method.) She talks a lot about productivity and setting goals, and she inspired me to set some goals of my own.
(If that sounds like something you’re interested in, here is a link to her channel. I’m not affiliated – I just think she’s fantastic.)
2017 was the first year I set goals. I was due to have baby #2 in March of that year, so I kept the goals simple (except for one biggie, which was to begin losing weight). Some of them were successful and some less so (I succeeded at losing weight, I failed at organizing the guest room, which is still to this day a Room of Crap).
It was difficult for me to set very many meaningful goals the last two years because I had a baby. One of my goals was merely to “survive each day”. Now that she’s on the cusp of turning two, I feel that 2019 is a year that I can possibly achieve more. (Have you ever had to complete a lot of goals or achieve quite a lot while having a baby? I’d love to hear about it in the comments below!)
My New Year’s Goals for 2019
1. Finish the Konmari Method
In the Sping of 2018 I became very inspired to put a lot of work into my home.
Why? Because I realized that my home had become so full of unorganized mess and clutter that it was no longer my haven. My anxiety did not recede when I tried to relax in my home. Instead, I’d look around at everything in my home and feel continually overwhelmed. It was making me crazy.
After spending a few months trying out traditional decluttering methods, I decided it was finally time to pull out the big guns a.k.a. Marie Kondo’s book. You can read all about that here.
I began the Konmari Method in June and did pretty well getting through it until September when life started kicking me in the teeth. It didn’t help that I was getting bogged down by the Komono category, which is literally “everything else” in your house.
I will have to rewrite my list of Komono subcategories and get back on the Konmari bandwagon. While I made good progress in the beginning, I never completed the category of stuff that has bothered me the most, so I haven’t yet experienced all of the “life changing magic”.
You’ll get to follow along with me on the blog as I continue the Method, of course!
2. Turn the Room of Crap into an actual home office/craft space
If you’re new to Cozy Tasty Home, you probably missed the Room of Crap saga I wrote about in the beginning. You can read part one here. The short version is: one of the four bedrooms in our house has devolved into a Room of Crap where we store/throw things we don’t know where else to keep or have time to deal with. We have two small children, and it’s darn near impossible to find the time to devote to organizing this room. It’s actually a bit of a hazard for the smallest child, so the kids have to be completely out of the way before I can really work on it. And it’s going to take a whole lot of time.
I made some strides with the room back in the Spring of 2018. I decluttered a lot of stuff from that room, including two large boxes of books (which is a LOT for me). However, I have reached an impasse with the Room. The problem is I don’t know what to do with the things we’re keeping but storing in there. I need to address that this year.
My goal is to turn the space into a home office and craft space. Right now our computers are in the living room and I have no dedicated place to sew. It would be so nice to be able to use all of the square footage of our home in a productive way.
3. Create emergency kits for all the vehicles and an emergency Go-Bag
This is something I should have done years ago. I was forcibly reminded this past Fall, when we had a big hurricane scare (with hurricane Florence, which missed us), and then got hit by a hurricane we didn’t see coming (hurricane Michael, which did hit us). I realized how woefully unprepared we were for the possibility of having to evacuate in case of a major hurricane.
Having emergency kits is about more than hurricanes though. It’s about being just plain prepared. While I have a first aid kit in my car, it’s very old and has sat out in the car in all kinds of weather. I don’t want to be in a situation where I need it and have it be utterly useless.
My goal is to create emergency kits for all the cars. The family car will have the largest one, because I’ll need to store spare clothing for the children. I’ll also need to include a blanket, flashlight, food, and water.
The Go-Bag is a bag you keep fully stocked and can grab in an emergency. This bag will have cash, some food and water, extra clothing, and other necessities. I hope to never have to use it, but it’s better to be prepared.
This post is getting really long, so I’ll be back later with Part 2 and the rest of my goals!
I hope this motivates and inspires you to set some goals of your own! What are your goals for the new year? Leave a comment below!

I love the car kits and go back goal. I don’t even have a first aid kit in my car. The only time I’ve ever really thought about it was when I drove through West Virginia one December.
Yeah, it’s just good to have on hand, as well as jumper cables and other emergency supplies.
