I Tried a Local Produce Delivery Service! The Neighborhood Harvest, Unboxing and Review

The Neighborhood Harvest Unboxing and Review

I’m a big proponent of supporting local small businesses. So when my husband discovered a local company that offers delivery of fresh locally grown produce, I was ecstatic. Someone can deliver fresh local greens, milk, and eggs to me? Plus fresh bread? I’m in!

The company is called The Neighborhood Harvest. They are local to me and offer a no-commitment delivery service. Their greens are all organic, pesticide-free, and non-GMO. They also offer a selection of local dairy products, pasture raised eggs, baked goods, and more.

Now, I just love having things delivered to me. I’m a busy mom with an active toddler, so going to different farmer’s markets to find fresh locally grown food is difficult at best. Then there’s the fact that I can get fresh locally grown salad greens and cherry tomatoes in January. (They are greenhouse grown!)

All we have to do is place our cooler by our front door, and they place our order inside with ice packs.

Unboxing!

Here’s what we ordered the first time:

  • Mini Persian Cucumbers
  • Baby Spinach (large)
  • Baby Kale (large)
  • Bibb Lettuce (large)
  • Pasture Raised Eggs
  • Whole Milk, Qt
  • French Bread Rolls
  • Tuscan Kale and Meatball Soup

It was exciting to open my cooler in the morning and bring in all the goodies!

Here’s it all laid out for you:

Lovely, fresh, great quality locally grown greens, plus fresh local bread, milk, pasture raised eggs, and soup delivered to me! What’s not to love?

Review!

The Greens

The greens were very fresh and last well in the refrigerator. They were also delicious!

I lightly sauteed the baby kale in garlic and olive oil, although it’s so tender and mild it would be great raw in a salad.

The lettuce was crisp and delicious. Bibb lettuce is my favorite, and I buy it all the time at the store, so I’m very glad to have found a great local source.

The Bread

The French Rolls are one of several bread options they offer and come from a local bakery. They are easy to warm up in the oven and have a crisp crunchy crust while being soft in the middle. It also freezes well. We order this bread every week. It’s delicious!

The Milk

I was already purchasing the Homestead Creamery milk from the grocery store to supplement the milk we purchase at Costco. However, I have to stand in line at the customer service desk for what feels like ten minutes every time I want to get my bottle deposit back. I’d much rather have it delivered to me.

When you are finished with your milk, simply set the empty bottle in your cooler when you’re due for your delivery, and your driver will take it for you. Then you’ll automatically get your deposit back without waiting ten minutes in line. Win!

If you haven’t tried this milk before (if you are local to me), it’s delicious. The dairy is located in Wirtz, Virginia. The milk is minimally pasteurized, so it still has a good flavor. You can read more about the Homestead Creamery and their products here.

My husband and toddler love the eggnog (I’m not an eggnog fan), and I also really love the creamline milk! (I love scooping the cream off the top of a freshly opened bottle for my morning coffee.)

The Eggs

I’ve tried other local pasture raised eggs, so I was excited to try the ones offered by The Neighborhood Harvest. I was hoping for brighter yolks from these, so it was a little disappointing that they looked much like the regular organic eggs I buy from the grocery store. However, if you want local pasture raised eggs delivered to you, these are a good (albeit a little pricey) option.

The Produce

My daughter loves the mini Persian cucumbers, and since cucumbers are one of the few vegetables she’ll eat, I make sure to always have them on hand.

We’ve also been ordering the cherry tomatoes recently.

They’re fresh, gorgeous, and delicious.

Harvest Kitchen

The Neighborhood Harvest offers food from their Harvest Kitchen, which features soups, homemade croutons, humus, and more. For our first order, we tried the Tuscan Kale and Meatball soup and had it with some of the French rolls.

It was actually very good. My only complaint is that they serving is small. My husband and I split it to have as a small lunch, but one person could possibly eat the entire container. So if you want this for a family dinner, order two or more containers.

As of the time I’m writing this post, we have received six weekly deliveries from The Neighborhood Harvest.

Here is one of my December orders, with the ingredients for my Holiday Salad!

I’ve also made a veggie hash using their greens, cherry tomatoes, and goat cheese.

Other Neighborhood Harvest products we have tried and enjoy:

  • Goat cheese (Seriously, this stuff is worth it alone. It’s so good.)
  • Harvest mix greens
  • Creamline milk
  • Garlic and herb brioche croutons (if you like croutons, these are fantastic)
  • Local honey

So overall, what do I think?

As I said above, we’ve been ordering from them for six weeks. We are extremely pleased with this company. They provide such a wonderful service, and I’m so glad to be able to get fresh local greens delivered to me.

Yes, their goods are more expensive than what you pay at the grocery store. Of course they are – this is stuff that’s locally grown and made, and it’s a small business. I find it a small price to pay for supporting local farmers.

I also have a coupon code for you! Use my personal referral link here to receive $15 off after you place two orders!

(Full disclosure, I will get a $15 credit as well when you use this link. Everybody wins!)

I hope you will give The Neighborhood Harvest a try if you live locally to me. If not, I hope this inspires you to check in your area to find if you have a similar service!

Note: I am not affiliated with The Neighborhood Harvest. This is my honest opinion of a service I use.
