Are you buying gifts for a small child this Christmas? Then I have a helpful guide for you!
I think books make the best children’s gifts. Most people I know have houses overflowing with toys. Rather than add to the clutter, give a child a book they can enjoy over and over.
Below I have my Gift Guide for Children’s books. I’ve listed some tried and true favorites that my children love and that I also give as gifts to other children.
For Littles
My girls just love Never Touch a Monster! Each page has different rubbery wiggly monster parts for your little one to touch, and it’s easy and fun to read. Your little one will enjoy the story just as much as the monsters!
(There is also Never Touch a Dinosaur, another hit with my kids.)
This little board book, First 100 Words, is one of my baby’s favorite books. She loves to point at the pictures and have you tell her what they are. This is a great book for babies and toddlers.
Llama Llama Hoppity-Hop by Anna Dewdney is my baby’s favorite book. She loves to follow along with the commands of the book, which include hopping, stomping, and clapping. The book ends with a “big hug now!”, so I always get a big hug from her at the end – and then we read it again!
For Preschool and Early Readers
One of my girls’ favorites is We Are in a Book! by Mo Willems. This award-winning book will make your kids laugh and laugh and Elephant and Piggie discover they are in a book and what they can make the reader do.
I have to plug one more Elephant and Piggie book because they are just that good. I Really Like Slop! by Mo Willems is extremely funny to read and hilarious for kids. Piggie introduces Elephant to his favorite food, slop, and begs him to try it. Kids will laugh hysterically at Elephant’s reaction to trying slop.
This book is such a hit, my daughter’s preschool teacher asked to borrow it to read to her class. Pete the Cat and the Missing Cupcakes by Kimberly and James Dean is about Pete and his friend Gus, who are making cupcakes for their party. Then the cupcakes start disappearing! Who could it be? They need to look for clues.
I don’t profess to know what it is about Pete the Cat, but kids just love him. This book is one of my childrens’ favorites.
My daughter received this book as a gift, and it’s been a favorite since then. The Book with No Pictures by B.J. Novak will have your kid laughing maniacally at the things the book makes you say! (Especially things like BLORK and BA-DOONGY FACE!)
Press Here by Herve Tullet was another awesome gift for my daughter. It’s a fun interactive book that tells you what to do with sometimes surprising results. It’s also great for teaching left and right and numbers 1-5, and kids love pressing the dots on each page.
For the Little Ballerina
Swan by Julie Morstad is the story of the life and dance of the ballerina Anna Pavlova. It is a poetically written, beautifully illustrated book that may bring tears to your eyes. This is a lovely book for any child who enjoys ballet.
Sticker Books
This Build your own Dinosaurs Sticker Book is great for any kid. They’ll have a lot of fun putting together a whole book full of dinosaurs.
This Sticker Dolly Dressing Around the World is another fun sticker book for the kid who loves putting outfits together. Lots of different cultures from around the world are included.
The Historical Sticker Dolly Dressing books are fantastic. I actually want to collect them all to do the stickers myself! My daughter really enjoyed the 1950s Fashion sticker book. There are lots of fun outfits to create for different kinds of people.
Vintage and Classic Books
Madeline is the classic book by Ludwig Bemelmans. I wasn’t familiar with this book when my daughter received it as a gift years ago, but I understand now why it’s considered a classic. My daughter went through a phase where she had to be read this book every night (my husband still has it memorized). It’s definitely a favorite.
The Little Critter books by Mercer Meyer were popular when I was a child. Now my children love them too! Some of their favorites are Just Go to Bed!, Just Me and My Mom, and Just Me and My Dad. I also have my very beat up and falling apart copy of Play with Me that was mine that they like, but I sadly can’t find a replacement for it.
Dr. Seuss books are always a hit with kids. I’ve linked for you a collection that includes my childrens’ favorites, Cat in the Hat, One Fish Two Fish, Green Eggs and Ham, and Fox in Socks. My personal favorite is Green Eggs and Ham, and my husband prefers to read Fox in Socks.
I hope this gift guide is helpful in picking out some wonderful books for Christmas! Do you have any suggestions to add to the list? Also, I’d love to know what your child’s favorite book is!

I always loved reading Fox in Socks and Oh Say Can You Say to my niece and nephews. Chickachicka Boom Boom is fun too. My favorite as a kid was Hand, Hand, Fingers, Thumb.
Hand, Hand, Fingers, Thumb is also one of Gemma’s favorites. 🙂
