Homemade Buttermilk Salad Dressing

homemade buttermilk dressing

I was grocery shopping the other day (wait, when am I not grocery shopping, I LIVE at the grocery stores…), and as it sometimes happens when I’m in an unfamiliar store with a fussy baby who I forgot to pack snacks for, I picked up the wrong thing. Like low calorie orange juice. Blegh.

I also thought I was buying a glass container of whole milk, but instead I accidentally got buttermilk. All right, great. I hardly ever use buttermilk, and when I do need it, I make the fake last minute I-forgot-this-recipe-requires-buttermilk by adding lemon juice to regular milk and letting it sit for five minutes.

Happy accidents like this are fun because they allow me to experiment. As I put together a salad of butter lettuce and spinach for dinner, I decided to try my hand at home made salad dressing using the buttermilk.

I pulled out things from the fridge and spice cabinet that would taste good together and tweaked the ratios and until it tasted right. It turned out extremely well.

Homemade Buttermilk Dressing

  • 1/2 cup Buttermilk
  • 1/4 cup Hellman’s mayo
  • 1/4 cup Greek yogurt
  • 1 tsp of lemon juice (use 1/2 tsp if you do not want it to be tangy)
  • 1/4 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 tsp Dried Dill Weed
  • 1/2 tsp Parsley
  • 1/2 tsp Garlic Powder
  • 1/4 tsp Onion Powder
  • 1/2 – 3/4 tsp Salt, or to taste
  • 1/4 tsp Black Pepper

Whisk all ingredients together and use as you would a ranch dressing.

This dressing is delicious as a topping for salad or as a dipping sauce for breaded chicken, french fries, and even onion rings!

    1. I’ve been making it for a few months now, and it’s way better than anything from the store. It lasts for a couple of weeks in the fridge, too. It’s also so easy to tweak that I don’t really bother to measure the ingredients anymore and just make it to however I want it to taste that particular day.
