It’s about halfway through August, which where I live means god awful heat and humidity. Stores are teasing us by selling fall decor already, the craft shops are getting their Halloween fabric in (if only I had time to sew my daughter an awesome costume), and it’s back-to-school everything.
We are dreaming of cooler weather, crisp fall breeze, bundling up in cozy sweaters, and indulging in pumpkin spice everything (if you’re into that).
Unfortunately for our autumnal dreams, there’s a month to go until fall. Here in Virginia September is “Still Freaking Summer,” and we won’t get much cool weather until October.
How can we enjoy the last few weeks of summer when we are sick of the heat and just want it to be fall already?
1. Enjoy sleeping in a few more times during the week (assuming your kids aren’t back in school yet or don’t wake up at 5:30 am). Sure, we’re working on getting the children back on their school schedule, but enjoy at least one more good snooze if you can.
2. Conversely, get up early and enjoy the sunrise before the days get shorter. I love having quiet time alone in the morning when the sun is coming up while the rest of my family is still sleeping. There’s nothing better than enjoying the break of day with a cup of coffee alone. It’s peaceful and starts my day off on the right foot.
3. Put on a playlist of summer tunes. Beachy tunes a la Beach Boys will get you in the mood to enjoy the summer, and Best Coast’s California dreaming sound will have you itching to relax in the sand. Even if you’re stuck inside because it’s just too dang hot out there, having relaxing music on in the background can bring more joy to your day.
4. Remix your summer wardrobe. Lay out your favorite tops, shorts, and skirts, and see if you can create a cute new outfit you haven’t worn before. Also, pull out that sundress you only wore once and get some more use out of it. Even if you only wear it to the grocery store, enjoy wearing it while the weather is nice!
5. Enjoy a meal outside. This can be tricky of course because of humidity and mosquitoes, but if you can make it work, enjoy a summer al fresco meal.
6. Prepare a cool summer dinner featuring a fresh salad and seasonal fruit. A delicious cobb salad topped with a homemade buttermilk dressing and a side of sliced watermelon is what summer is all about.
I hope these tips inspire you to make the most of the last weeks of summer. Let me know in the comments how you enjoy the end of summer – or do you huddle in the air conditioning desperately awaiting the changing of the leaves?
